Welcome to the inaugural issue of a shot of culture, a monthly snapshot of West Queen West brought to you by CultureShots. In this issue, May has come to WQW bringing with it the CONTACT Photography Festival. Meet some of the artists and galleries involved, see what the indie designers are offering, and find out where to get what you need to make your cultural statement.

ART

ARTISTS : Paula Grgurich Shewchuk at Gallery 1313 as part of Traces, opening May 15

CS: Is this your first time participating in the CONTACT Photo Festival?

PGS: Yes. I have been a lurker until now.

CS: Tell me about the festival you founded in Australia.

PGS: I was a founder of the Photography Gallery of Western Australia, now called Perth Centre for Photography, in 1992, and was co-director until 1996. I also helped lay the foundations for FotoFreo, a biennial of photography, on right now, in its 4th edition, in Fremantle, Western Australia.

CS: What do you look forward to seeing during CONTACT?

PGS: The public installations, especially under the Gardiner and at the airport, since I work in that medium also. And, of course, the work of my Gallery 44 colleagues.

STYLE

VINTAGE : Melanies Closet, 829 Dundas Street West?

Let me be the first to say it: Dundas is the new Queen West. Just as Bathurst and Gladstone border the area known as WQW, so do they border the hippest part of Dundas Street. With its vintage shops, hip cafés and restaurants, Dundas West has a lot to offer. One such offering is Melanie’s Closet. Formerly located in Kensington Market, the shop is now on Dundas near Euclid Avenue. However, during May the Closet will be open by appointment only, as owner Melanie Janisse and partners Shawn Campbell and Paul Janisse prepare to move to a building they have bought at Gladstone and Dundas. They will spend the summer renovating and plan to open Zoots Café in the fall.

A reincarnation of the Zoots Café Melanie worked at many years ago in Detroit. “It was an organic, non-tradiotional, artsy space where a lot of garage bands you hear about today started out” says Janisse. The Closet will occupy a room at the back of the café. Visit www.melaniescloset.ca for updates and information.
